Racial Profiling is Institutionalized Racism Essay

On the night of February 4th 1999, Amadou Diallo, an unarmed and innocent African immigrant, was gunned down in a hail of 41 bullets while standing in the vestibule of his own apartment building in the Bronx. The officers responsible for Diallos death were part of New York Police Departments elite Street Crime Unit. The plain-clothes officers approached Diallo and pulled their weapons. When Diallo, probably believing they were thieves, pulled out his wallet, the elite officers opened a barrage of 41 bullets on the unarmed black man. nbsp; Witnesses and forensic evidence suggest that the officers fired a second round of shots after a brief pause and that Diallos frame absorbed a majority of the bullets after having hit†¦show more content†¦nbsp; In the past year alone, at least three unarmed black men (Diallo, Malcolm Ferguson, and Patrick Dorismond) were killed in New York City. In all three instances, police were acquitted of all charges. Kenneth Boss of the NYPD has been acquitted of two murders, Amadou Diallo (1999) and Peter Bailey (1997), and is still working as a police officer. nbsp; The Diallo incident is a clear model of how racism operates in this country. Racism is much more complex than feelings or acts of hatred toward another race; it is an institutionalized system of oppression, sharing similarities with sexism, classism, and homophobia but with distinct differences. This institutionalized effort creates an environment where four white men can lynch a Black man and be absolved of all guilt. nbsp; nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; 1) the media plays a major role in the criminalization of Black people, creating stereotypes that are used to justify racial profiling. Diallos neighborhood isnbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; portrayed as a cesspool and war zone, and the officers claimed that Diallo fit the description of a rapist in the Bronx; this was their excuse for approaching the victim with deadly force. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; 2) law enforcers in general abuse the unnecessary powers they are granted, with fatal results. Homelessness in the Ozarks and its Effect on Mental Illness in Older Adults Landon Green Missouri State University Homelessness In the Ozarks: Then to Now The issue my team chose to research and tackle was homelessness in the Ozarks. Specifically, we wanted to look at the demographics of the issue and then ultimately we wanted to look into the effects the issue of homelessness is having on another serious issue, mental illness, and vice versa. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines homelessness as one having no home or permanent place of residence. It defines mental illness as any of a broad range of medical conditions that are marked primarily by sufficient disorganization of personality, mind, or emotions to impair normal psychological functioning and cause marked distress or disability and that are typically associated with a disruption in normal thinking, feeling, mood, behavior, interpersonal interactions, or daily functioning. Some of the examples of mental illnesses given by Merriam-Webster are major depression, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or panic disorder. The main asp ects of the issue that will be covered are the current status of the issue, the causes, current organizations involved in finding solutions, and what more needs to be done. Looking at the status of homelessness from the past to the present, we can see that there has been a drastic increase in the percentage of homeless. In a 2013 Statewide Homelessness Study

Buddhist Economics (236 words) Essay Example For Students

Buddhist Economics (236 words) Essay Buddhist EconomicsBuddhist EconomicsMost people think that religion and economics dont mix. So you would think the same in the case with Buddhism and economics. But actually the there is a set of rules that go along with our modern day economics that have their own meanings. Buddhists believe that spiritual health and well being go hand in hand. They use the fundamentals of practical ecnomics and mix it with the values and morals of Buddhism. The Buddhist point of view takes the function of work to be at least threefold: to give a man a chance to utilize and develop his faculties; to enable him to overcome his ego-centeredness by joining with other people in a common task; and to bring forth the goods and services needed for a becoming existence. In modern economics, when there is a demand for say, beer, it is supplied by production and distributed to the consumers. When it is consumed, that demand is satisfied. Modern economics stop thinking here at the satisfaction of the demand. There is no interest in what happens after the demand is satisfied. Economics inspired by Buddhism would be concerned with how activities influence cause and condition. This means looking at the three conditions of humans, the individual, society and nature or the environment. In the case with the beer, the person would ask how does this influence the individual, society, and the environmentEconomics Essays

Measurement of Financial Elements as Per IFRS

Question: Discuss about the Measurement of Financial Elements as Per IFRS. Answer: Introduction In the present times, it is very important to have the rule set for doing the proper implementation of each and every work. This is important so as to ensure that the different companies are implementing the global concepts which may prove to be useful for the purpose of accounting. It is necessary for the different companies to comply with the global standards. This is because if the financial accounting is done on the global basis, it is important to ensure that the global standards are met. In this report the discussion will be focused on the five different elements of the accounting standards which have been defined in International FRS conceptual framework and the ways in which the same can be measured by the different listed companies. Financial elements defined in IFRS International Financial Reporting Standards has been designed in order to ensure that there should be the common global language for the business affairs so as to understand and ensure that the different company accounts can be understood and can be compared across the different boundaries of the world. These may prove to be the important consequences of the growth of the international shareholding in the world. It has been observed that in the recent times, these have been replacing the different accounting standards which are there at the national level. These are the standards which may be easily replacing the different national standards in the world. The need for the financial elements has been done in order to ensure that there should be the proper accounting around the world. The five elements of financial statements can be related to the measurement of the financial position of the company may include the following: Asset: An asset may be defined as the resource which may be controlled with the help of the entity or can be done through the number of past events and from which there are a number of futuristic economic benefits which may be flowing to any given entity. Asset might be defined as some of the probable economic benefits which may be enjoyed or are being controlled by an specific entity because of the past events and its transaction (Epsteinc Jermakowicz, 2008). One of the key characteristics of the same is that the assets give the representation of the probable economic benefits in the future. Any receivable may be the asset if and only if there may be a probability that there is a future benefit with the same. The employees which are the part of the company may give the representation of the future economic benefits which are enjoyed by any company. Though, they are not generally owned or controlled by the company directory and dont qualify as assets (De George et al, 2012). Liabilities may be defined as the obligations which may be there around and entity and something which may arise from some of the past events for which the settlements may be expected from the result or from the outcome of any specific entity. This may include the embodying the economic benefits i.e. assets. Most of these liabilities include the future payment of cash, the amount and the time for the same which may be specified by the contract which may be enforced. In the real sense, the liability may be something which may not be required in cash. Instead of this, it is something which can require that the company may transfer some of the other assets to some of the other service providers. An example of the same is the warranty liability which may be created for the seller. A liability may not be required to be represented by the help of the written agreement (Hooks et al, 2010). Also the same cant be enforced by the law. For example, a company may also ensure that the salary may be terminated for the give period of time which may otherwise not be required to do so. This leads to the creation of the liability at the given date of termination. Equity: A nominal equity may be defined the nominal residual interest which may be there in some of the nominal assets related to the entity after doing the deduction of the liabilities according to its nominal value (Borio et al, 2005). Thus, equity or the net assets for any given corporation may be defined as the residual interest which may be there in the assets which may be related to the entity which remains after deducting the liabilities. The financial performance of any company can be defined with the help of the statement of comprehensive income which may consists of the income statement and the statement which may also be including some of the other comprehensive income (Wstemann Kierzek, 2005). The financial performance may also include some of the elements which may be required for the application of the IFRS Standards. Revenues: These may be defined as the inflows or some of the other kind of enhancement of some of the assets of the settlement of the liabilities which may be observed from some of the ways including the proper delivery and the production of goods, by providing some of the services effectively or by the other activities which helps in the ongoing major or central operations of the company (Silva Couto, 2007). The overall revenues increases in the overall economic benefits which may be observed by the company during the given accounting periods in the form of the payments such as the out flaws or the depletion of some of the assets and incurrence of some of the liabilities because of the decrease in the overall value of equity. Statement of cash flows: This may include the operating cash flows, the investing cash flows and the financing cash flows. The operating cash flows include the principle revenue producing activities which are related to the entity which can actually be calculated by the application of the indirect method (Bonsn et al, 2009). The profit and loss can actually be adjusted for the effects which may be related to the transaction which is a non-cash transaction and the items which can be associated with the cash flows. Investing cash flows may be defined as the process including the acquisition and the disposal which can be there in case of the long term asset which may not be included in the cash equivalents. Financial cash flows may include those activities which may be the part of result of the changes in the overall size and the actual composition which may be related to the given equity and borrowing related to the entity (Mackenzie et al, 2012). Important of the Measurement of the financial elements in IFRS It is important to measure the implication of the five elements of IFRS for the listed companies (Barth, 2013). This is important as it helps in doing the overall determination of the allocation of the capital which may be there across the companies, countries which are within the individual businesses. These are useful for the listed companies as they can help them in the determination of the facte if the company will undergo a failure or a success. This is also important because it is an evolutionary process. Listed companies are generally very big and they undergo a number of activities (Peng Bewley, 2010). There are some of the economic activities which have the large influence on the company and reporting is necessary under this case. These are more and more important in case of the listed companies as there is more and more companies in the world being listed in different markets. Measurement of financial elements It is important to do the measurement of the financial elements as specified by IFRS in case of listed companies. After completion of the analysis of the financial element there is an important for the implication of the same in the listed companies. In order to do the measurement it is important to identify the assumptions (Beest et al, 2009). The assumptions in the same include the economic identity assumption and going concern assumption. Economic entity assumption may be defined as the one which includes the fact that each and every different economic events can be identified within he given economic entity. For example, if someone needs to have the ownership of the stocks of Forex, it is important that the information should be related to the United States Operations but also related to the EU and other international operations. The financial information under which there is a controlling interest should be combined with that of the FedEx. Another key assumption is that in case of the absence of the information, there can be an indefinite operation in the business (Marden et al, 2009). The financial elements of the listed companies may assume that the business is a growing concern. Principles/ Techniques for measurement There are four different principles which can be used for the purpose of measurement. This includes the historic cost principle, the realization principle, the matching principle and the full disclosure principle. The historical cost principle is the principle which states that the asset and the liability related measurements should be actually related to the amount which has either been given or received during the exchange transaction. GAAP is something which can be used for the measurement of the assets and the liabilities which may be there on the original transaction value which is actually the historical cost. In case of the asset, it is actually the fair value of something which can be given in an exchange (Picker et al, 2013). An example of the same is that in case a company borrows a total cash of value of $1 million and did the signature for the interest bearing note which may promise to do the repayment of the cash in future, the gross value of liability may turn out to be $1 million which would be the overall cash received in exchange. This is important for the companies which are listed for the number of reasons. Firstly, it helps to privde the important information related to the cash flow. This is because it helps to represent the cash or the cash equivalent. Another principle is the realization principle which includes the different elements of FRS. This is used for the purpose of determination of the accounting model which may be a challenging task. This may include when there is the overall completion of the process of earning and the assurance for the collection (Beuren et al, 2008). This kind of criteria is useful for the different listed companies as it helps them to ensure that there is no recording of the revenue event. The timing in case of the revenue is the key elements for the listed company. The Statement report includes the revenue of the company over the period of one year. Revenues are important to be analyzed for the listed company as it help to analyze if the company is making the required profits or not. Before doing any kind of investment, it is important to do the analysis if the company is making any kind of revenues. The future earnings may be defined as the key factor as the future prospects of the business of the company and the earnings can be determined on the basis of the stock prices (Tsalavoutas et al, 2010). The total revenues which are earned by the company can be analyzed through some of the elements such as sales, costs, assets and liabilities. Conclusion Thus it can be concluded that the different financial elements which have been defined in International Financial Reporting System are considered to be important for the analysis of the different ways in case of listed companies. It is important to understand the different elements which are the part of the financial reporting as they can be used for measurement of the listed companies. In this research paper, the measurement of the listed companies has been analyzed and understood. This has been done by consideration of the measurement of different element and the different measurement principle under which the same can be useful. Further there has been a critical analysis of the different principle and techniques which can be used for the financial analysis. The report contains the detailed discussion related to the analysis of measurement of financial elements in case of the listed companies. References Epstein, B. J., Jermakowicz, E. K. Two commandments in French

Two commandments in French The French have two commandments that set them apart from other people. First of all, they believe that too much work is unhealthy, and second of all, they regard food as an important aspect of life. They believe that they work to live unlike other people who believe that they live to work. They take long weekends and have many holidays that keep them out of offices.Advertising We will write a custom article sample on Two commandments in French specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Many fulltime employees get more than 37 holiday days every year. They work for 35 hours a week, being a reduction from 39 hours since the year 2000. The government has requested employers to increase their working hours. What is more, state workers spend a lot of time doing things that are not connected with the work itself because government agencies and corporations do not have strict work regulations and policies. In addition, they argue that they do not wor k a lot because they earn peanuts for their great efforts at work. Despite few working hours, the French achieve their goals because families usually work on various projects simultaneously. The French do not set many targets at work because they are certain of their failure. Their meetings do not give results because of poor communication between members of the group or a team. On the other hand, they go on strikes to get conditions or privileges they want at their work. Dialogues are rarely sued to solve problems.  The French have another commandment that makes food an important aspect of their culture. They have preserved many stone-age culinary recipes. However, their recipes receive numerous criticisms for lack of hygiene. French people believe that bacteria should be allowed to breed and multiply, thus exposing food to microorganisms. They do not practice hygiene when preparing, transporting, or preserving food in restaurants. Even though they treasure food, they ignore the importance of maintaining hygiene. For example, they do not clean utensils properly after and before their use. The French love to eat raw food especially fruits. Their culinary preferences are unique because while other countries have celebrity chefs, France has celebrity food. The French also love junk food, however, research has shown that they are less fat than people from other countries are. They accuse Britons of consuming overcooked and boiled food, which they accompany with beer after meals. Despite criticism, they love several British meals such as cakes and biscuits. The Economy of Japan Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

The Economy of Japan - Essay Example Exchange rate in a floating regime are determined by the supply and demand for a that currency, if the demand for a currency is high then the value of the currency will appreciate against other currency, if demand for a currency falls and speculators sell the currency then the value of the currency depreciates against other currencies. This paper analyses the factors that have contributed to the fluctuations in the Japanese yen exchange rate, this factors include inflation, interest rates, unemployment levels, monetary policies, fiscal policies and trade balances and other factors. Inflation is the rise in prices of products in the entire economy for a long period of time, inflation is caused by increased money supply or even an increase in the level of prices of inputs such as crude oil prices, there exist two types of inflation as Keynes depicted, the cost push and demand pull inflation, in Japan the level of inflation has risen steadily and this means that the local currency namely the Yen has appreciated over time against the other major currencies. Governments will always try to balance inflation and unemployment levels, according to the Philips curve the... Unemployment can be defined as the number of people who are jobless in an economy it is calculated by dividing the number of people who are unemployed with the number of people who are termed as the work force in an economy it may also refer to a condition in which an economy has idle resources that are not being utilized. Today japans unemployment levels have declined to 4.0% since May this year, the highest recorded level of unemployment in Japan from 1953 because this is when the economy initiated records was 4.8%, unemployment can be reduced through the use of fiscal and monetary policy, unemployment has slightly gone down in Japan, this decline is as a result of increasing interest rates, when interest rates increase the cost of borrowing capital rises and therefore less investment will occur in the economy and this will result into a decline in the employment rates. Therefore the decline in unemployment means that the exchange rate will appreciate. Interest rates: Interest rates are referred to as the cost of borrowed funds, a rise or drop in interest rates will affect the exchange rate of a countries currency, the interest rates are expected to rise according to the Japanese, when interest rates increase then the currency will appreciate, however if low interest rates exist in a country its currency will devalue. Today interest rates are rising and therefore the value of the yen is appreciating against the other major currencies, this is the reason why the Japanese yen has appreciated against the US dollar for the past two months as a result of rising interest rates. Trade balance: Trade balances occur when the level of exports do not balance with the value of imports, when there is a positive balance of trade whereby exports exceed imports then

Social Policy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words - 2

Social Policy - Essay Example The role of the state therefore, has become crucial, while incorporating the new developments in the societal changes of the time in their social policy so that state benefit can reach every one. The predetermined and the predefined modules of the social changes have not only become outdated and irrelevant in the fast changing social environment, but the urgent need to address the evolving paradigms of the society at large, has become imperative. The various discourses relating to the people who are most vulnerable to be excluded from the state benefits can be broadly classified into three categories like RED or redistributive discourse, SID or social integration discourse and MUD or moral underclass discourse. RED became more emphasized in European Union as Portugal and United Kingdom, both had relatively significant number of people who do not have enough resources to meet the average living standard and hence often were deprived of the state benefits which should have been available to them. To ratify RED, social integration took the form of employment but here also, the marginalised workforce was poorly paid which still made a mockery of so called social integration. The moral underclass discourse was different in the sense that it considered that segment of society that had defied the norms of society and had become vulnerable to the moral and ethical correct societal norms. In United Kingdom, MUD became more popularly accepted after Blair government made special efforts to understand and evaluate the cause and consequences of this class of society in a comprehensive study. The wide ranging implications of the multi-cultural societies, as discussed earlier, have brought in an equal number of interlinked social issues and related problems which are increasingly becoming major concern for the state. Apart from the problem of

The Theology of the Emerging Church Research Paper

The Theology of the Emerging Church - Research Paper Example Its members do not adhere to the traditional modernist dualisms of spirit and matter, mind and body, sacred or secular, but they want to go a different part in the midst of postmodernism.2 Thesis Statement: This paper aims to study the place of Christology in the theology of the Emerging Church. The need for the study The primary aim and mission of Emerging Church is to bring Christians from different denominations by making significant changes on how the church should be run and organized. This study will have ecumenical importance because it has implications on bringing the different churches together. The church is still diverse and fragmented movement; leaders just want to call it a conversation. They want to be heard and many of the different churches have been spreading their thoughts and beliefs through the different media including the Internet. Main Body The Emerging Church has been understood as a conversation on how to interpret the gospel in the midst of postmodern cultur e, and a call to action in this setting. It has been regarded by proponents that the Emerging Church has made important contributions to the church’s ecclesiology.3 The church has undergone a paradigm shift due to culture change. Discussions on postmodernity and postmodern have been taking place in various denominations. The terms postmodernity, postmodernism, and postmodern cultures have been freely interchanged but are not, in reality, synonymous. Nathan C. P. Frambach prefers to use the term â€Å"post-whateverism†, whose language refers to a ‘concept of flux’4. The world passes through various phenomena and transitions, for instance, the industrial age which refers to the past, the information age which is the present, and the biotechnology age which is the future. There are three core characteristics that identify the Emerging Church, and these are: ‘identifying with the life of Jesus, transforming secular space, and commitment to community as a way of life’.5 These practices lead to the other six practices which are: ‘welcoming the stranger, serving with generosity, participating as producers, creating as created beings, leading as a body, and taking part in spiritual activities’.6 The Nine Patterns Eddie Gibbs and Ryan Bolger discussed the nine patterns in imitating the ways of Jesus, leading to a new conversation and a new life with the Lord, apart from the practices of the traditional church. Identifying with the life of Jesus The example of Jesus, when he lived with his disciples on earth, is characteristic of the emerging churches. But they also hold Christ as unique. Jesus’ teaching is linked to the gospel he proclaimed. He asked his disciples to repent and be baptised because â€Å"The kingdom of God is at hand.† This is the kingdom promised by the Hebrew prophets and to be established with the coming of Jesus. D. A. Carson says that emergents are following the uniqueness of Christ and that this uniqueness allows them to have a new thinking and a new way of questioning their

Love Is Patient, Love Is Kind

Love Is Patient, Love Is Kind I Cor. 13:4-8 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. Christian love is Christs Commandment for all of HIS children. Jesus said, By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another (John 13:35). John, inspired by the Holy Spirit, once wrote, We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death (1 John 3:14). And by this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome (1 John 5:2-3). A Pharisaic lawyer once asked our Lord, Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said to him, You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. (Matthew 22:36-40) . According to Matthews Gospel, the very essence of the Law and the Prophets is to love God and to love others. And we see this term the Law and the Prophets used in one other place in Matthews Gospel. Its in this passage that we find the Biblical definition for love: Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. (Matthew 7:12) In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus elaborates on this do unto others as you would have them do unto you principle. He says, Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise. But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful. (Luke 6:30-36) When the King James translators came upon the Greek word agape (Gods Love), in addition to using the English word love to transliterate it, they often chose the English word charity. This was meant to reinforce the idea that agape is a selfless, giving love. Gods Love is unselfish and unconditional. Now we know what is meant by Christian love. Love is a holy disposition given to us when we are born again by God. It is the love of God shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. True spiritual love is characterized by meekness and gentleness, yet it is vastly superior to the courtesies and kindnesses of the flesh. We must be careful not to confuse human sentimentality, carnal pleasantries, human amiability and affability with true spiritual love. God commands love first to Him and then to others. It is not the indulgent, self-seeking love which is in us by nature. If we indulgently allow our children to grow up with little or, no Scriptural discipline, Proverbs plainly says we do not love them, regardless of the human sentimentality and affection we may feel for them. Love is not a sentimental pampering of one another with a loose indifference as to our walk and obedience before the Lord. Glossing over one anothers faults to ingratiate ourselves in their esteem is not spiritual love. The true nature of Christian love is a righteous principle which seeks the highest good of others. It is a powerful desire to promote their welfare. The exercise of love is to be in strict conformity to the revealed will of God. We must love in the truth. Love among the brethren is far more than an agreeable society where views are the same. It is loving them for what we see of Christ in them, loving them for Christs sake. The Lord Jesus Himself is our example. He was not only thoughtful, gentle, self-sacrificing and patient, but He also corrected His mother, used a whip in the Temple, Severely scolded His doubting disciples, and denounced hypocrites. True spiritual love is above all faithful to God and uncompromising towards all that is evil. We cannot declare, Peace and Safety when in reality there is spiritual decay and ruin! True spiritual love is very difficult to exercise because it is not our natural love. By nature we would rather love sentimentally and engender good feelings. Also many times true spiritual love is not received in love, but is hated as the Pharisees hated it. We must pray that God will fill us with His love and enable us to exercise it without dissimulation toward all. The word love can mean many different things in the English language. It can refer to a mothers love for her child, love of country, romantic love, friendship, or Gods love towards mankind. The Greek language has different words for different types of love. The original manuscripts of the New Testament of the Bible were written in the Greek language so we will take a look at the actual words used in the original manuscripts. We will explore the following Greek words: Agape Phileo Agape is defined as the love that God has for his Son and toward mankind. John 3:16 For God so loved (agape) the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Notice the first part of this verse, God so loved (agape) He gave. Agape love gives, agape love is the deep and constant love of a perfect being (God) towards an unworthy object (mankind). Ephesians 2:4 5 But because of his great love (agape) for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions it is by grace you have been saved. Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love (agape) for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. We were unworthy objects, we were sinners. Agape love is love that only comes from God. God showed his love (agape) among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. Agape love gives unselfishly and takes action in a visible way. As sinners, we deserved the death that Jesus took upon himself on the cross. We were unworthy of the love that God demonstrated toward us when he allowed his only Son to die on the cross for us. Agape love is why Jesus died on the cross for our sins in such a visible and humiliating way before all creation. Agape love truly does take action in a visible and if necessary humiliating way. Agape love is God doing what is best for mankind and not necessarily what man desires. Agape love is not drawn out by excellency in its objects. It is an exercise of the divine will in deliberate choice, made without assignable cause. In contrast, Phileo is defined as to be a friend to, indicating feelings, warm affection. As we study love we will begin to understand that Phileo is the love that can come easily because of like interests, commonalities. Sometimes we meet people who we naturally like. They are easy to get along with, you may share the same ideas, and theyre likable and enjoyable to be around so you feel comfortable and have good feelings being around them. Many times you develop a warm affection toward them and enjoy their company. Some want to say that God has only agape love but we know that is not true. Take a look at the following verses: John 3:35 The Father loves (agape) the Son and has placed everything in his hands, Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for Gods wrath remains on him. John 5:20 For the Father loves (Phileo) the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these. In John chapter 21, both words are used but each word retains its distinctive and essential character. Before we study John 21, lets review the events that lead up to this chapter. Peter is one of the twelve disciples, a fisherman by trade, who follows Jesus during three years of ministry. Near the end of Jesus life, just before Jesus is crucified, the last 24 hours go something like follows: The Passover meal or last supper is observed by Jesus and the twelve disciples During the meal Jesus says that He will be betrayed by one of the twelve disciples Peter is quick to say in Mark 14:29 Even if all fall away, I will not. Luke 22:33 34 records Peter saying: But he replied, Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death. Jesus answered, I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me. They leave the upper room and go to the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus asks a few disciples to keep watch and pray, Peter is one of them. Jesus returns to find them sleeping as recorded in Mark 14:37 38 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. Simon, he said to Peter, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak. Recorded in Mark 14:39, Jesus comes back a second time to find his disciples sleeping again. And again as recorded in Mark 14:41, Jesus returns a third time and asks Are you still sleeping and resting? Judas arrives on the scene and the soldiers start to arrest Jesus. In John 18:10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priests servant, cutting off his right ear. Jesus rebukes him as recorded in John 18:11 Jesus commanded Peter,Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me? Next we find Peter following at a distance as Jesus is lead away. Mathew 26:58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome. Read closely the following verses recorded in Mathew 26:69 thru 75 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. You also were with Jesus of Galilee, she said. But he denied it before them all. I dont know what youre talking about, he said. Then he went out to the gateway, where another girl saw him and said to the people there, This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth. He denied it again, with an oath: I dont know the man! After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, Surely your are one of them, for your accent gives you away. Then he began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, I dont know the man! Immediately a rooster crowed. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times. And he (Peter) went outside and wept bitterly. Jesus dies on the cross. Peter and the other disciples are scared and hiding out. What had they witnessed the last three years? All the miracles, the feeding of the five thousand, the man with leprosy who was healed, the blind man whose sight was restored and on and on we could go, not to mention all the teachings and parables by Jesus himself. Hes dead now, where do they go, and what do they do? Jesus remains in the tomb on the Sabbath. No one could go to the tomb on that day. The next morning, Mary Magdalene goes to the tomb but it is empty. She runs and tells the disciples, Peter and John run ahead of the other disciples they see the linen wrappings but no Jesus. They go to their homes. Jesus appears to Peter on the road to Emmaus. Jesus appears to the disciples and tells them to go to Galilee and wait for him. They go there and wait. Peter grows weary says Im going fishing (John 21:3 Im going out to fish, Simon Peter told them, and they said, Well go with you. So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.) Peter had gone back to what he had done before meeting Jesus and the other disciples followed. The next morning Jesus stood on the shore and called out to them Friends, havent you any fish? The disciples answered No. Jesus tells them Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some. Miraculously, they caught an abundance of fish. John who is in the boat with Peter realizes that it is Jesus and says to Peter It is the Lord! Peter is so happy that he jumps in the water and swims to the shore. There Jesus had fish cooking on burning coals and invited them saying Come and have breakfast. When they had finished breakfast, the following dialogue took place and is recorded in John 21:15 thru 17 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these? Yes, Lord, he said, you know that I love you. Jesus said, Feed my lambs. Again Jesus said, Simon son of John, do you truly love me? He answered, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. Jesus said Take care of my sheep. The third time he said to him, Simon son of John, do you love me? Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, Do you love me? He said, Lord, you know all things, you know that I love you. Jesus said, Feed my sheep. Loving one another (agape love) is one of the greatest outward expressions of our devotion to God. Jesus demonstrated agape love towards Peter even though Peter had failed so many times as evidenced in the verses listed above. Jesus was entrusting to Peter to be a leader in the Church when he said to Peter Feed my sheep. A Pharisee asked Jesus Which is the greatest commandment? Lets look at Mathew 22:37 thru 40 Jesus replied Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it. Love your neighbor as yourself. All the law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. Loving one another with an agape type love shows our love for God and to God. John 14:15 If you love (agape) me, you will obey what I command. John 15:12 My command is this: Love (agape) each other as I have loved (agape) you. I John 4:20 -21 If anyone says, I love God, yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother. In contrast, when we love one another with an agape type love, the Spirit of God can work through us in the lives of other people that need to see the love of Jesus.

Foreign Aid - Our Obligation to Help the Less Fortunate Essay example -

Ã‚  Ã‚     What is absolute poverty?   According to Robert McNamara it is "life at the very margin of existence" (Singer 219).   It is a life that, if not ended by early death, causes a kind of misery unseen to those living in the United States.   Compared to the estimated 1.2 billion people, worldwide living in poverty, those of us in developed countries experience a life of luxury.   The things that we take for granted, such as cars, computers, microwaves, and televisions, are extravagant items that most people living in extreme economic poverty will never see. The gap between the affluent and the poverty-stricken is wide, and is getting even wider in many areas of the world. Are we morally obligated to help those less fortunate than ourselves?   Should we merely go about our daily lives, forgetting about those on the other side of the world who are dying of malnutrition?   These are just a few of the questions that I am about to explore.    The fact that there is absolute poverty in the world cannot be argued. The way we deal with this is the issue at hand. When observing the raw data, including the high infant mortality rates and low life expectancy statistics afflicting impoverished countries, one cannot help but pity these people.   Unfortunately, when it comes down to actually taking action and deciding what to give up, we seem to feel just as much, if not more, pity for ourselves. Many reasons have been given for why we may not be obligated to give up portions of our wealth to help those in need.   Fortunately, in my opinion, many of these arguments can be refuted.    One such argument is that we do not have an obligation to assist the poor because of our own individual property rights.   Robert ... ...oals are attainable if we work together, and as individuals, to make things happen.   If one person feels that it is possible to give more without sacrificing something of equal moral significance, I believe they should make an internal commitment to do so.    Works Cited Brown, Mark Mallock.   "Halving the World's Population is a Realistic Goal."   21 September 2000.   Online: http://www.globalpolicy.org/socecon/develop/mbrown2.htm. New Healthy Fruit Smoothie at Burger King Essay

If fast food is unhealthy and is believed to cause obesity, why is there still a fast food restaurant every few blocks? Perhaps because there are a lot of people who are still consuming fast food and backing its business, the fast food industry survives and appears to even increase. The fact that modern life is fast paced as well as the economy hasn’t fully recovered makes people prefer to work more consistent and eat faster. Needless to say, the competition among well-known brand names is getting more challenging, and advertising plays an important role in marketing and drawing consumers’ attentions. Knowing the only disadvantage of fast food is its unhealthiness, Burger King has recently introduced their healthy real fruit smoothie using David Beckham. By equating his charm, his famous credibility, and his physique, David Beckham endorses the new Burger King’s smoothie to not only women but also soccer fans and whoever seeks healthy choices at a fast food restaurant. Throughout the commercial, Burger King shows their true intentions: to visually attract the audience with their appealing and healthy smoothie, to interest them by using a celebrity along with the slogan â€Å"exciting things are happening at Burger King†, and to show part of the American culture through the story and the conversation. In the commercial, Burger King is attempting to refresh their reputation of being unhealthy and creates a visual appeal for their smoothie. By showing how the ripest strawberries are being cut and blend nicely, the commercial effectively forms a visual image of the drink and stimulates the audience’s curiosity to try it out. In addition, strawberry is definitely one of the most favorite flavors for kids while banana is a very healthy fruit. As a result, a mixing of those two fruits surely captures the attention of children and mothers who want to purchase a possibly healthier choice. As given on the Burger King’s website, the smoothie’s nutritional facts are acceptable, 200 calories and forty grams of sugar per twelve ounce serving (small size). Even though forty grams of sugar is a little bit too much for a 200 calorie drink, most of it comes from real fruits and plus, there isn’t any saturated fat or anything else. These definitely won’t kill you or make you fat compared to other sugary, creamy drinks. However, people often think that healthy food is boring and tasteless. By filming the ad expertly and convincingly with high definition, Burger King is able make the smoothie look realistically tasty and delicious. Its most visual appeal is when it was poured into the glass. The fluid looks amazingly delicious and well-blended. The color also appears to be reddish orange as it is well-balanced between strawberries and bananas. As Hirschberg mentioned in his â€Å"The Rhetoric of Advertising†, Burger King does create â€Å"the distinctive image for the product† in their commercial. The smoothie glass is shown closely on the half left of the image while other half is showing a bunch of fresh strawberries. They also blur the strawberries in the background to emphasize the prominence of the smoothie glass. This allows the audience to see its smooth viscosity closely and triggers their appetites as well as interests. Instead of illogically exploiting well-shaped models and athletes to promote unhealthy products like other franchises, Burger King utilizes David’s healthy and lean physique to indicate their product as a naturally healthy smoothie. Starting off with a spokesperson claiming â€Å"exciting things are happening at Burger King†, the setting of the commercial is refreshing, exciting, and appealing just like the smoothie itself. Surprisingly, the spokesperson’s tone isn’t too excited as expected. It is rather a normal, not-a-big-deal tone. It seems to imply that it is usual to have exciting things at Burger King, and in this case, it is David Beckham with the strawberry banana smoothie. Apparently, Burger King tries to persuade the audience that many celebrities do actually visit Burger King, and that they should come and eat at Burger King as well if they want to meet their idols. Using David Beckham to promote the smoothie is brilliant. Not only David Beckham is appealed to women, but also his classy fashion style is attracted the young adults, let alone his recognition as a professional soccer player. Additionally, like David, those kinds of frosty, sweet, and fruity smoothies have always been attracted to women rather than men. Furthermore, his healthy body makes the drink even healthier. Also, David has been recently promoting for the Sainsbury’s Active Kids as an ambassador. He has been on many posters and advertisements that encourage children to eat healthy and exercise. Burger King apparently knows what’s going on and has their commercial set. Through the conversation between David Beckham, the cashier, and the manager, the commercial creates an entertaining situation and shows part of the American culture. Humor is definitely one of the American cultures. Mostly everything we see on TV has entertaining and humorous elements. In the commercial, audience will be able entertained as soon as David orders his smoothie and mesmerizes the cashier. As the cashier is being fascinated by his charming radiance, David shifts into a luminous gentleman wearing a classy, black suit and reorders his smoothie in a very heavy English accent. The way David pronounces â€Å"strawberry banana smoothie† and the cashier’s daydreaming look are what make it worth a giggle. The music is also very antiquated. It sounds like one of those Western classic, love songs that appeared in â€Å"Gone with the Wind†. The commercial also exploits homosexual agenda by showing the male manager, after snapping his cashier out of David’s charm, is also stunned by David’s dazzle. Same sex attraction is just a daring joke as it either makes the audience impressed or offended. Nonetheless, whether it is offensive or not, the scene creates an emotional appeal and makes an impact on the audience as one of the advertising techniques Hirschberg has discussed, â€Å"They supply the unstated major premise that supplies a rationale to persuade an audience that a particular product will meet one or another of several different kinds of needs†. After all, the homosexual joke serves its purposes: to make impressions and to indirectly persuade that the strawberry banana smoothie is just irresistible for both sexes. It is not a surprise to see celebrities or well-known professional athletes appearing in a commercial nowadays. Using David Beckham to promote the new smoothie is a great move of Burger King. Burger King shows that fast food does not necessarily mean unhealthy. To get the word out about their changes, they have to pull out their biggest marketing campaign ever using a lot of well-known celebrities. So far, David Beckham as well as the new healthy smoothie menu is definitely the aces and the most success compared to other commercials. Its views jump over 20,000 in a matter of hours proving that it works. â€Å"With their latest initiatives, Burger King is showing commitment to areas that I’m passionate about, such as supporting charities, helping children and improving the healthier eating options. I am happy to help the brand launch its first smoothie platform, which is a great addition to any diet†, said David Beckham.

Do Colleges Accept ACT Takers as Much as SAT Takers Is the ACT Disadvantaged

Do Colleges Accept ACT Takers as Much as SAT Takers Is the ACT Disadvantaged SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips The ACT is rising rapidly in popularity, but students and parents have a good question do colleges accept ACT tests as much as they accept SAT tests? Do colleges mark you down for taking the ACT? The Straight Facts: More Students Take the ACT Now Parents of many students today may remember the SAT as being the only game in town. When I first took the test as a young student in the 1990s, everyone took the SAT. But in 2012, the ACT overtook the SAT as the top test. In fact, these days the ACT has about 10% more takers than the SAT, and this number is climbing every year. With this fact out of the way, the question still remains, is the ACT as legit as the SAT? Will the same universities accept the ACT as the SAT? And more subtely, are there disadvantages to taking the ACT? The ACT is Accepted In terms of pure acceptance, the ACT is accepted by all 4-year colleges. This was true as early as 2007. So you can rest easy knowing that if you take the ACT, you do not need to take the SAT to get into college. In terms of nominal legitimacy, the ACT is equal to or even above the SAT. Universities will accept ACT takers universally. Caveat: Mandatory ACT Takers One reason that the ACT has more takers than the SAT is that the ACT has been aggressive in pressuring states to use the ACT as statewide tests. That is, certain states like Kentucky require all students to take the ACT. Some of these "forced takers" won't be applying to colleges, or won't be applying to the level of colleges you're planning to. That means that the "real numbers" for the ACT may be a bit less than the official numbers. In my opinion though, this issue is not serious, but still one to take note of. Caveat: Acceptance Doesn't Mean Equal In many spheres of life, just because something is accepted on paper, doesn't mean it's equal in practice. For example, many colleges say the writing section is "optional but recommended" you should read this as "required" unless you're really exceptional. Colleges say the ACT is accepted, but is it equal in practice? In reality, since the ACT has been popular for a shorter period of time, admissions staff may not be as informed about what the scores mean. They may understand the SAT math-verbal split, but have a hard time grasping what it means to be strong in science but weak in math on the ACT. My belief, from speaking to many admissions committees directly and indirectly, is that this was more of a concern before 2010. These days almost all colleges have substantial experience with both tests. There is no substantial bias against the ACT anymore, certainly officially, but also in practice. Verdict: The ACT is every bit as accepted and legit as the SAT Other Articles to Read: Should you take the SAT or ACT? Class of 2017: Consider Skipping the new SAT for the ACT? Executives that might formulate a response to a news story also have obligations to ensure that they act on behalf of the organization, not their own independent value systems. Thus, if the story were about an issue that is highly debatable by public society, the representative must ensure that responses are in line with organizational values or vision before responding. This can avoid liability on behalf of the executive and also spare the company from negative social publicity. This is to ensure trustworthiness for the long-term in the eyes of those who read this response. At the same time, responses must be factual and able to be cross-checked through some fact-finding source before giving a formal response to the story. Can politics ever be considered just for Augustine Essay

Can politics ever be considered just for Augustine - Essay Example The great influence that his teachings had and continue to have in the modern period can be attributed to his persuasive nature, since the was able to influence the basic processes through which the Christian church operates today; not only the catholic church but also the Eastern Orthodox and the Protestants. With this in mind, it would be prudent to ensure that the teachings of this man are studied so that it can be determined whether he considered politics to be just or not. If one considers Augustine’s teachings, one would come to the conclusion that he believes politics can be just because of his belief in free will. Free will, according to Augustine, is an essential part of the human connection with God (Elshtain, 2004). While this may be the case, he lived during an age where many individuals were often subjected into lifelong servitude and slavery. The latter people did not have the free will to be able to make their own choices in life and only had to submit to the wi ll of their masters, a fact which would not have been in agreement with Augustine’s beliefs. ... democratic system where the free will of an individual is what determined whether he participated in the politics of his society or not (Visser, 2010). The fact that many of the individuals who lived in the Roman society lacked free will because of the autocratic government that was in place, may have had an influence on the teachings of Augustine, who, despite not having been born a Christian, was among those who developed the doctrine of free will in the religious and political scene of the time. According to Augustine, free will existed because it was granted by God, so that in order for an individual to achieve it, it had to be granted by God (Valk, 2009). The fact that some individuals in the society did not possess free will was because God had not seen it fit to grant it to them and this ensured that they were not yet worthy of it. It can be said that those individuals who have the free will to participate in politics have been granted this privilege by God and since God is co nsidered to be just, then there is justice in politics. Free will is absolutely essential to human nature as this is what determines what individuals do with their live, whether good or evil. The ability to make this choice is among the most fundamental aspects of politics because it enables individuals to take differing viewpoints without necessarily having to see eye to eye on some matters. It was this teaching which came to be adopted by the protestant movement, especially the Calvinists, who accepted Augustine’s teaching that there is both free will and divine grace, and as such, the will of an individual is often predestined. One of the conditions which Augustine considers to be necessary for individuals to attain free will is the keeping and fulfilling of all the commandments of

Why are ethics in sex research important Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Why are ethics in sex research important - Essay Example For example, confidentiality is a key issue in sex research and it is enhanced when ethics are observed during the data collection process (McLaughlin 69). Ethics in sex research also help in gaining the support of the public for the research being conducted. Ethical behavior ensures that researchers observe integrity and conduct high quality research, as a result of which the public can fund such an initiative since it is being conducted with adherence to the set standards. Adherence to ethics in sex research is also important since it contributes to the promotion of social and moral values. While conducting sex research, it is essential to respect human rights, observe the law, as well as be socially responsible. In addition, it is important to ensure that the health and safety of the subjects being used in the research are guaranteed. When there are ethical lapses during sex research, the human subjects taking part in the research will be harmed and this is morally wrong (Ritzer and Ryan 546). Ethics in research are also vital since they help researchers to avoid discriminating their subjects. As an ethical obligation, researchers should treat all subjects equally and avoid discriminating some subjects when conducting research. Observing the code of ethics is also crucial in sex research since it enables researchers to abide by the law. Moreover, adherence to norms of research is an indication that the researchers are competent and the research results are valid and reliable. Respect for ethics is a prerequisite for professionalism and competence when conducting research. When researchers observe ethics during sex research, they manage to respect the dignity of humans, autonomy, as well as privacy of the subjects involved in research. In addition, ethical conduct enables researchers to take the necessary precautions, especially when dealing with vulnerable subjects (McLaughlin 70) When conducting sex research, there are a number of

Max Planck :: essays research papers

Max Planck On April 23, 1858 Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck was born in Kiel, Germany. He was the sixth child of a law professor at the University of Kiel. At the age of nine his interest in physics and mathematics was developed by his teacher Hermann Muller. When he graduated at the age of seventeen he decided to choose physics over music for his career. Although he is know for physics he was an exceptional pianist who had acquired the gift of being able to hear absolute pitch. His favorite works of music were known to be Schubert and Brahms. Entering the University of Munich in 1874 he got little inspiration and was unimpressed at the University of Berlin which was between the years of 1877 and 1878. He in turn did independent studies primarily on Rudolf Clausius' writings of thermodynamics which inspired him and in July 1879 he received his doctoral degree at the age of twenty-one. He became a lecturer at the University of Munich. His father helped him be promoted to associate professor at Kiel by means of professional connections. At the age of thirty he was promoted to full professor at the University of Berlin. After he decided to become a theoretical physicist he started a quest for absolute laws. His favorite absolute law was the law of the conservation of energy which was the first law of thermodynamics that stated that you could take any equal amount of energy and transform it into the same equal amount of energy ideally, meaning no energy was lost. The second law of thermodynamics led him to discover the quantum of action or Planck's constant h. How he came upon his formula for quantum mechanics well be explained as follows. Planck saw that blackbody radiation acted in an absolute sense because it was defined by Kirchhoff as a substance that could absorb almost all radiating energy and emit all that it had absorbed perfectly which is associated with the first law of thermodynamics. By using various experiments and theoretical failures many scientists tried to find the spectral energy distribution to try and draw a diagram of a curve that showed the amount of radiation given off at different frequencies for a blackbody with a given temperature. Then using Wien's law which worked out for high frequencies but didn't work for low, he saw a relationship with the mathematics of the entropy of the radiation in the high- frequency waves in correlation to the low frequency waves and he guessed if he combined the two in the simplest way that he would get a formula that related to

Affirmative Action :: Quotas Race Minority Academics Essays

Affirmative Action In Texas, acceptance to public universities for high school students is now based on academic achievement - if a student is at the top ten percent of his or her class, he or she will be automatically accepted. This is a way to counter the unfairness of affirmative action causes because the admission has nothing to do with race or sex. Arguably, this policy is reasonable because students studying at the same high school receive equal opportunity to learn and educate themselves. This may seem fair, but the same problem still exists. If a student has to work part-time just to make a living because his or her family is unable to sustain financially, how is this student going to find time to study and be successful in school, and therefore, be in the top ten percent? In recent supreme court ruling, the point system that were using in admitting law students at the University of Michigan was ruled unconstitutional and therefore taken out. The university used a point system that quantified the qualification of the applicant's status. If a student's points exceed a certain number, he or she is admitted to the school. The university gives an extra twenty points to the minorities in terms of enforcing affirmative action and helping the disadvantaged. The six of the judges believe that the defined number system is in many ways similar as having a set quota in admitting minority students, which was banned in the case of University of California v. Bakke of 1978. The judges believe that having a rule in admitting students strictly by race is impersonal. In Bakke's case, the University defends itself for having such quota with the fact that admitting minority students into medical school can help improve social discrimination because the minority are less likely to have the education or the financial status to go to a medical school. As a result, being a doctor becomes majority profession. The judges at the time countered the university's statements by stating that the school is being unfair to the non-minority applicants, who are not directly responsible of the social discrimination. The Supreme Court ruled the University of Michigan's point system unconstitutional in the undergraduate level, but kept the same system for the Law school. They believe race should be taken into consideration, but should not quantify qualification. Although the judges opposing this ruling stated that "A fixed numerical score for racial minority status has the virtue of honesty.

A Critique on Sharon Beatty’s Essay

In her essay, Sharon Beatty provides useful insights for the dissertation supervisor as well as the doctoral student with respect to the nature of the supervisor-student relationship, the dissertation process, and early career development in publishing. The topics discussed in the said paper includes: (1) preparation for the dissertation in the American Education System; (2) Getting started; (3) stages of research; (4) supervision during the process; (5) the study and getting closure; (6) moving dissertation to journal articles; (7) dealing with the submission and review process; and (8) the next step.In the introduction, Beatty noted that the dissertation process can be enjoyable when all the ingredients are present and all procedures are followed to a T. She stresses the need for a positive attitude while undergoing the dissertation process and she shares her views on this matter based on the experiences she has gained as a member oh at least 14 doctoral dissertations on marketing.A s a critique, I would have to say that Beatty covered the aspects of writing dissertations very well. Special mention should be made to the fact that Beatty imparted useful and interesting advice with respect to how the relationship between doctoral supervisors and students can evolve and grow in the process. Needless to say, the supervisor and the students should harness a symbiotic relationship along the way to ensure the success of the dissertation.

Free Essays on Contemplation

Have you ever had a relationship where you have been with the person so long that you don’t know what to get them for a gift anymore? I was in that situation at Christmas and never though it would cause me to have an eye opening moment. â€Å"Mike hurry up we’re going to be late†, we were going to a Leafs game. I got him tickets for Christmas, which was the only thing I could think of and very difficult to get, so I was pretty excited. We got on the train finally and I found myself looking for other people who were going to the game. There were all sorts of people. There was a mother and her daughter the little girl had her face painted with a blue maple leaf. There were three businessmen, I could hear them talking about the game. An old man was holding his ticket so hard it looked like he thought someone was going to take it from him. It was a nice train ride that built up anticipation for the game. Time flew by as I asked Mike all the questions I could think of about the Leafs. In no time we were off the train and heading to the ACC. We gave the person at the gate our tickets and headed to find our seats. I again found myself looking at people this time because certain things caught my ey e. There was a man already drunk, swaying on his feet, a group of girls wearing ... I think it was clothes, a group of businessmen were eating sushi, I hate sushi. Then I saw what I thought was a typical group of hockey fans wearing jeans and jerseys. All of these different people were very interesting to me, so as we sat down I was still analyzing them while Mike watched the warm up. At first, I noticed how empty the arena was and wondered why there were not more people here to watch their home team warm up. So I asked Mike, â€Å"Most of the people who come and watch these games are people who do not care about hockey. It’s just that they have season’s tickets.† He said. I thought that was ridiculous. Free Essays on Kants Synthesis

In the Transcendental Deduction â€Å"Kant is asking the question how we can have knowledge of objects.† (Ewing 70) To describe the grounds which make knowledge and therefore experience possible is what he is trying to achieve in the synthesis. This subjective deduction is just one the strategies Kant uses to make his point. To begin to discuss anything from the transcendental deduction first there must be an understanding of the transcendental aesthetic. Here Kant demonstrates the a priori nature of space and time. ‘Transcendental’ can be defined as a mode of knowledge that is a priori. ‘A priori’ refers to necessity and universality to something, knowledge independent of sense experience, and any possible experience of space and time. ‘Aesthetic’ can be simply described as perception. Experience of space is where intuitions, or given perceptions, are from. Space is a priori because a condition of any possible experience is for the things which are being experienced to exist in space. Space is an essential element for experience because without space, experience is not possible. Also experience must happen in time. Time exists only if there is someone to experience it. With this rough overview of the transcendental aesthetic now we may move on to the three synthesis of the transcendental deduction. Important to understand is that Kant’s three synthesis are actually the same single synthesis being described in different ways. It could be looked at as the different aspects of a single explanation. Kant states that an a priori concept may relate to an object, however, may not relate to experience. In order for ‘a priori’ concepts to exist, nothing can be derived from experience. Rather, these a priori concepts serve as the conditions that any experience rests upon. ‘Synthesis’ means the act of combining something. The three synthesis to be discussed can be thought of as a priori conceptual synthesis which ser... Make a list of your human capital Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Make a list of your human capital - Assignment Example In the office, computer literacy in MsOffice productivity tools such as MSword, excel, powerpoint and outlook is a basic requirement. The ability to surf and do research online is also now a required skill. The degree of required computer proficiency may vary but it is still needed in the new work place. I am happy to report that I could be a part of the modern workplace because I am very proficient in computers and also literate in using other devices. Without this knowledge about computers, one can only do manual labor which are not high paying such as doing construction work, flip burgers or wait tables in restaurants. I consider my good health as a human capital because it enables me to do a lot of things. People who are very healthy may take this human capital for granted but this is actually very valuable because it ensures that we have the energy to achieve our goals and objectives. If we become sickly, we are almost out of the game of pursuing our dreams because we cannot physically pursue it. My social skills can also be considered as a human capital because it enables me to establish connection with other people whom I may need in the future. This human capital should not be underestimated because this skill provides the opportunity. Any skill or knowledge would be useless if there are no opportunities to use it. My college education of course is an invaluable human capital. My college diploma guarantees my competency in my field of study and almost assure me of an above average salary upon employment. It also serves as a ticket for a long term career in any endeavor that I may choose where there is a huge possibility where I could assume executive position because of my education. Unlike with my other human capital where its possibility of being used as a source of income is very small, college education opens a lot of possibility for me to make a living. I can use it as a credential in applying for a job. Or it could also be

History of Baseball Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

History of Baseball - Research Paper Example Baseball has been there for long in the history in different parts of America, Europe and Asia. Different sources maintain different records about the origin of baseball as the game, and thus make the exact origin of it debatable. However, there is no doubt in the fact that baseball has been played in America in a proper way since the later half of the 19th century. In addition to the American League that all of us are generally aware of, there used to be a Negro League as well. Evidence has been found for the claim that for centuries, the indigenous tribes of America have been playing a game much like what we know today as baseball. However, to play that game, the tribes made use of sticks and balls which were made from various kinds of materials. Like this, Cricket, that is known worldwide as an English game is much similar to baseball in nature. The similarities between cricket and baseball include but are not limited to developing the pitch for the game, the need to hit the ball with the help of a bat, and the use of mitt for the purpose of fielding. Baseball had always been there in the history of Asia as well. Moghols and Genghis Khan used to play the games that were just like the baseball though they had to be riding the horses in order to play the game. There used to be a Major League Baseball which had divided into two separate leagues, namely the National League and the American League. The latter of the two is often referred to as the Senior Circuit and this happened to be the original baseball league. With the expansion of baseball after numerous decades, the National League was added to the Senior Circuit. In America, baseball has hardly changed at all since the evolution of this game, with the basic equipment that includes a bat, a ball, a base, and a glove remaining unchanged. In the 1800s, Americans formed informal teams to play baseball. â€Å"By the 1860s, the sport, unrivaled in popularity, was being described as America's "national pastime. "† (Bellis). Discussion of the modern baseball is incomplete without discussion of Alexander Cartwright (1820-1892) who lived in New York and in 1845, founded the modern field of baseball. Cartwright together with several other members of the New York Knickerbocker Base Ball Club devised rules which were internationally accepted for baseball. Steroids have played an important role in altering the history as well as the integrity of baseball. Steroids have long been part of the baseball game. There have been players who have talked about the use of steroids by the players in early 1960s, yet most players hold the consensus that baseball players did not start using steroids until late 1990s. Illegal edges have conventionally been looked for by many baseball players. They have been spitting on the balls, stealing signs, tampering the balls and making use of amphetamines to boost the energy level of the body. However, there has not been much resistance towards the use of steroids by the baseball players because of the fact that in order to be successful in baseball, one did not need to be bulky or muscular. Accordingly, consuming steroids hardly made any difference. The 1990s home run explosion was the first clue that steroids were being used by players to get stronger, quicken reflexes and play through injuries.
